 Senecio Herreianus “Purple Flush” Care

Senecio herreianus ‘Purple Flush’ is a captivating cultivar within the Senecio genus, belonging to the Asteraceae family. It’s a variation of the Senecio herreianus, commonly known as String of Beads or String of Pearls. The leaves are small, spherical, and densely packed along slender, trailing stems. They have a unique, translucent stripe on one side, which allows light to penetrate the leaf for photosynthesis. What sets ‘Purple Flush’ apart from the standard Senecio herreianus is its stunning foliage coloration. The leaves have a purplish hue, more pronounced when the plant is exposed to bright light or cooler temperatures. This purple tint adds an extra layer of visual interest to the already charming succulent. The plant typically grows to about 60-90 cm in length, making it an excellent choice for vertical gardening. Its cascading stems create a dramatic effect, especially when allowed to spill over the edges of containers or hanging baskets. Flowering is relatively rare in indoor conditions, but Senecio herreianus ‘Purple Flush’ can produce small, yellow to off-white, brush-like flowers. These blooms have a faint, sweet fragrance and add a delicate touch to the plant’s appearance.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Can tolerate a few hours of direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays to prevent leaf burn.

Watering

Water sparingly — allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of damage, so keep it light and infrequent.
